Neck Pain

Stretching therapy for neck muscle stiffness and tightness.
Your neck (cervical spine) has an important task to provide support and mobility for the head (average weight 11-lbs). It’s not surprising to have pain when we think about the activities we do everyday such as sitting in front of a computer, long periods of watching TV and a prolonged period of poor posture. The nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments, and discs of your neck become strained and irritated.
Problems in your neck can cause headaches, migraines, shoulder pain, stiffness with difficulty turning your head, and pins and needles into your hands and arms.
Some common neck conditions treated are: cervical stenosis, radiculopathy, degenerative disc disease (arthritis), cervical sprain/strain, whiplash, torticolis.
Shoulder Pain

Anatomy of the shoulder joint- ball and socket.
A painful shoulder with limited movement is a common complaint. It’s usually caused by injuries that affect the joint, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage (rim around the socket). The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body which in return makes it the most unstable.
The more common injury seen is something classed as impingement ,where there is a reduction in the normal space between the ball and socket. Thus, limiting the amount of room your shoulder joint has to function. Other common injuries seen in the shoulder are “frozen shoulder”, dislocation/subluxation, AC joint (collar bone) sprain, fractures, and arthritis.
To make matters worse other areas of the body also refer pain into the shoulder; like the nerves that supply your arms/shoulders originating from the neck, abdominal organs, heart, and clots in your lungs.
Rotator Cuff Injuries
Rotator cuff injuries are usually attributed to trauma, normal degeneration of the actual tendon and tissue, or from repeated impingement in the shoulder joint pinching the tendon. In general the rotator cuff (RTC) does degenerate as we age due to the blood supply decreasing over time. The effects of this is a thinning of the tendon and weakness of the muscle which makes it easier to injure the tendon. This does not mean that everyone will have a rotator cuff injury, but a high amount of people can be more likely to tear as they get older.
Some common rotator cuff injuries treated are: tears (full or partial), tendinitis (inflammation of the tendon) and bursitis.
Elbow Pain

Elbow pain while not as common as the other body parts, makes you unable to move your arms. The majority of pain and injuries come from repetitive type movements or activities such as: using hand tools, typing, throwing a ball, or swinging a golf club. In certain incidences the ligaments in the elbow may stretch more then it’s capable and thus sprain. Or the tendons may become inflamed from the repetitive movements.
The most common elbow conditions treated are:
lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), medial epicondylitis (golfers elbow), and Ligament sprains.
Hand and Wrist Pain
Hand and wrist pain most of the time is a result of traumatic injury or overuse injury from an activity or occupation. Occupations which mainly use their hands everyday such as welder, construction, hair dresser, and transcription are just examples of why you may have pain in the hands and wrist.
The hand and wrist contain many different small bones, ligaments, tendons, nerves and blood vessels. Injuries to these structures can lead to pain, swelling, bruising, numbness or tingling, and locking of fingers.
Most common causes of injuries to the hand/wrist include:
-falling on your hand
-jamming a finger
-repetitive strain from long periods of typing, lifting, or sport
Some common hand and wrist conditions treated are:
carpal tunnel syndrome, hand and wrist fractures, wrist and finger sprains (thumb), DeQuervain’s tendinopathy are some of the few.
Back Pain

Patient with low-back (lumbar) pain
Back is the most common type of pain, and most cases aren’t caused by a serious problem. Majority of cases get better on their own within weeks, it is important to stay active as bed rest and decreasing your mobility makes it harder to get better.
The back is a complicated structure built around bones (spine), joints (ligaments), nerves, muscles, and discs.
Back pain is usually not a sign of serious medical condition, it’s much more likely that an awkward movement has pulled a muscle or sprained a ligament. Back pain can also cause symptoms such as numbness and tingling down your buttocks and legs, which occurs when the nerves coming out of your spine become irritated.
Some common back conditions treated are: low-back sprains and muscle strains, sciatica, herniated disc, spondylolisthesis/spondylitis (arthritis), sacroiliac pain, and motor vehicle accident back pain.
Hip Pain

Using walking frame to mobilize with hip pain
Hip injuries are painful and inconvenient, it’s important to quickly identify what the injury is so that we can determine what your treatment options are.
The hip is the bodies largest ball and socket joint, formed by the acetabulum which is part of the pelvis. The ball (the femoral head) forms the upper thigh (femur). Surrounding these structures you have muscles, nerves, cartilage and ligaments.
The hip can often cause pain in your buttocks, groin, knee, and outer thigh. Some other common symptoms include pain worse in the morning that improves throughout the day as you get moving, walking with a limp, stiffness, and radiating pain.
Some common conditions we treat:
Osteoarthritis, bursitis, gluteal tendinitis, hip flexor strain, piriformis syndrome.
Knee Pain

Staying active is the best way to avoid knee OA.
Not surprising given the amount of steps we take per day, that we can succumb to knee pain. It’s usually the cause of your knee pain which determines what symptoms present. Structures which can be injured around your knee include muscles, ligaments, bones, nerves, and cartilage.
Causes of knee pain vary per person, but can occur due to trauma (as in sports), degeneration and ageing, repetitive stress. Being overweight increases your risk to having knee pain due to your knee joint having to absorb more pressure when walking, running, or stair climbing.
Some common symptoms include:
-stiffness
-locking up
-grinding or clicking
-“giving out” feeling
-pain
Knee pain rarely improves on it’s own, it’s always best to seek treatment for it. Here are some of the common knee conditions we treat:
patella tendinitis, ACL/MCL (ligament) sprain or tears, meniscus problems, Osteoarthritis (OA), IT band syndrome (runner’s knee), Patella femoral pain, patella dislocation.
Foot and Ankle Pain

Your foot and ankle are made up of small bones working together to shift your weight, walk, run, and jump. With so much pressure put on such a small part of your body, it’s not surprising foot and ankles are prone to injuries like sprains, fractures and dislocations.
Foot and ankle pain can be attributed to ankle sprains (as in athletics), failing to stretch muscles properly, having flat feet (no arch), and other conditions such as diabetes and sciatica.
Some common foot and ankle conditions we treat: ankle sprains, Achilles tendinitis, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, toe sprains, foot sprains.
Sports Medicine

Athlete doing ankle rehab exercise on rope to improve stability and proprioception.
Sports injuries can happen unexpectedly, especially when you are functioning at a high intensity and your muscles can’t keep up. This is why it’s easy to “pull”, sprain, and break something.
As well as seeing people in the home, we also treat teams and athletes on location. For ongoing treatment of a specific injury, emergency injury evaluations, or concussion screenings.
I am proud to have worked with many groups of athletes including:
- York F.C. Academy – UK
- APS Schools
- Clayton & Fulton County Schools
- Division II & III Univ. Athletics
- Semi-Pro Football in GA
- VTO Sports, LLC Camps
- Rising Seniors Foundation Camps
- AAU Basketball
- JUCO Basketall Showcases
- NextGen Football Camps
- MCA & FRE & NUC Camps
ACL Prevention Program
One of the most common ways to injure or tear your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is through a non-contact mechanism. For example, landing from jumping in the air or quickly twisting and changing direction when running.
One of the best ways to prepare for indirect contact ACL injuries and the unpredictability of playing a sport is through balance or perturbation drills. These type of drills, as the one shown in the video are a part of a primary and secondary ACL injury prevention program we offer.
